Challenges and Opportunities for Hydrogen Premixed Combustion
Australia Section
Full Description
Abstract
Renewable hydrogen has been a center of attention in many countries as a potential alternative fuel for energy producing technologies, including gas turbines and reciprocating engines. Hydrogen has very different combustion characteristics compared with conventional fuels such as natural gas. Therefore, in most cases, significant modifications of these technologies are required such that they can operate with hydrogen-rich fuels. In particular, devices operating under premixed combustion mode pose more difficult problems when hydrogen is used as a fuel. The aim of this talk is to review opportunities present for renewable hydrogen to decarbonize the energy sector. Furthermore, our progress in addressing the technical challenges related to premixed combustion of hydrogen in devices such as gas turbines and reciprocating engines will be discussed. In this regard, a special focus will be placed on the role of numerical simulations in informing the design process of hydrogen engines.
